GROWING PAINS

Love blooms in the nurse’s office

Unrequited love stories rarely need quite so many stitches as the one depicted in Rajiv Joseph’s new play, Gruesome Playground Injuries. Joseph, a Pulitzer Prize finalist with a sure command of structure and persuasive insight, brings this story of painful romance to Second Stage. Eight-year-old Doug (Pablo Schreiber) and his classmate, Kayleen (Jennifer Carpenter), first meet in the nurse’s office of their elementary school. She has stomach pains; he has ridden his bike off the roof and gashed his face. As the years pass and their lives drift, they find each other again in various bedrooms and hospital rooms. They kiss, they fight, they talk, and try unsuccessfully to heal one another. Director Scott Ellis administers triage.
