Dir. Jean Renoir (1950). Renoir's ravishing first color film, shot on location in Bengal, is an appropriately stilted account of a English girl's coming to terms with love and death (if not colonial privilege); the movie was a powerful stimulus for another great cine-humanist, Satyajit Ray.
