Tom Rainey Trio
There's poetry in the array of abstractions comprising Pool School, the first disc as a leader by the ubiquitous and idiosyncratic drummer. Whether it's chatter and pummel, or murmur and plink, Ingrid Laubrock's saxophone and Mary Halvorson's guitar connect with their mate's percussion to form several cagey miniatures. Sometimes texture overtakes kinetics; sometimes specifics start to sound arbitrary. That’s how it goes with ever-shifting forms, especially those performed with this much attention to detail.
