If the dawn of a new year tickles your literary fancy, as it does some 300 of New Yorks finest wordsmiths, then what better way to celebrate the day than with a couple of poetry endurance tests? Beginning at 2 today, two long-running festivals host afternoons of readings. Catch John Giorno, Patti Smith, Philip Glass, Suzanne Vega, Eric Bogosian, Jonas Mekas, and scores of others at the Poetry Projects 37th Annual New Years Day Marathon Reading. If thats not enough iambic pentameter for you, a few blocks south, Bowery Poetry Club hosts Dark Matters, its 17th annual Alternative New Years Day Spoken Word/Performance Extravaganza, featuring 150 voices over 10 hours. Fans of the poet Bob Holman are in luck: Hell be performing at both events. At 2, Poetry Project: St. Marks In-the-Bowery, 131 East 10th Street, 212-674-0910, poetryproject.org, $20; Dark Matters: Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery, 212-614-0505, bowerypoetry.com, free
