'Brooklyn Qawwali Party'

Ye olde multiculturalism, often with a francophone subtext, is second nature at Barbes Records, for whom these acts record. Hence Paris-born, California-bred Pierre de Gaillande's English-language translations of poet-anarchist Georges Brassens, Chicha Libre's eclectic update of psychedelic Peruvian cumbias, and Les Chauds Lapins's acoustic renditions of early-20th-century chansons. Brooklyn Qawwali Party's Sufi-jazz ecstasy and Hazmat Modine's off-kilter blues should crank up the volume.
