Last Tango in Paris

Dir. Bernardo Bertolucci (1973). The last Euro art film to impact on American cine-mores is less classic than classified ad: A 20-year-old French dumpling (Maria Schneider) and 45-year-old American hipster (Marlon Brando) meet in an empty apartment for three afternoons of anonymous coupling and mutual, mainly mental, s&m exploration. Bertolucci was 31 when he directed Last Tango, but it’s a momento mori, offering a last glimpse of Brando before he walled himself up in a pyramid of flesh.
