The Exiles

Dir. Kent Mackenzie (1961). Kent Mackenzie’s lone feature is a neo-realist account of displaced Native Americans that has a powerful sense of place. Mackenzie treats the since-demolished Bunker Hill area of downtown Los Angeles with even more love than John Cassavetes showed Times Square in Shadows. The film has been called a ghost dance but its mainly non-professionals have a tremendous presence.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 7. Continues through Jan. 9, 2011
