AMERICAN GOTHIC, REVISITED

Darkpop mainstays get a new incarnation

David Lynch is reportedly a great fan of Black Tape for a Blue Girl, and sensibly so; the dark cabaret/chamber-rock trio mope ominously and growl brassily like Marlene Dietrich on an extremely emo bender, a formula introduced on their 1986 debut, The Rope. The Californians’ sinister glamour has inspired many an eyeliner-streaked offshoot, notably the Dresden Dolls, though Black Tape’s ninth full-length, 2004’s Halo Star, was the last to feature the core lineup of Sam Rosenthal, Elysabeth Grant, Bret Helm, Michael Laird, and Lisa Feuer. Last year’s 10 Neurotics featured cameos from several of them, centralized in a new ensemble with Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls and other newbies. Is their twist ending amicability? With Intimate Stranger and Plushgun.
