FREE-FALLIN’ JAZZ

This trio moves

Some jazz, for all its neat little multi-hyphenate micro-genres, can only be described in the scratchiest, frankest, most onomatopoeic terms. So for drummer/multi-instrumentalist Weasel Walter, guitarist Mary Halvorson, and trumpeter Peter Evans’s avant-garde antics, we can merely submit “skronk,” that atonal style of brittle runs and frenetic explosions that never fully coalesces, is never a full melodic cycle because it’s inspired and rerouted constantly in the immediacy of its own discovery . . . which also means it generally equates to an aural arrhythmia for casual jazz listeners. (Trepidation need not apply, ye young Brooklynites.) The trio has been moving together for a few years now, and our fingers are crossed for a studio release soon.
