The Pearl Theatre revives The Misanthrope
“Don’t hate the player, hate the game” hasn’t occurred to Alceste, the hero of Molière’s troublingly relevant comedy The Misanthrope. Alceste (a role Molière himself originated) loathes all the hypocrisy he sees around him and everyone who practices it. Yet this strict moral stance hasn’t diminished his love for the beautiful Célimène, the phoniest of them all. Using Richard Wilbur’s playful rhyming translation, Joseph Hanreddy directs this cheerfully despicable revival for the Pearl Theatre. Molière’s vision of his gilded age may well resonate with our own, and, if not, the play has some words for its would-be critics: “One should examine oneself for a very long time before thinking of condemning others.”
