Whether it’s building a fully functioning and interactive shaved-ice cart or creating a red-white-and-blue multimedia Hot Wheels sculptural installation, Brooklyn-based artist Miguel Luciano always finds a clever way to pay tribute to Puerto Rico, his native home. In the Museum of Arts and Design’s group show Think Again: New Latin American Jewelry, Luciano pokes fun at some Latinos’ fascination with big jewelry by adorning a thick gold chain with a platinum-plated green plantain, a stereotypical yet iconic symbol of Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture. (A new look for Daddy Yankee, perhaps?) The exhibition features more than 80 works by roughly 50 Latin American jewelry artists/designers, including Mirla Fernandes, Claudia Cucchi, Valentina Rosenthal, and Jorge Manilla.
