The Idiotarod, inspired by the Iditarod long-distance race in which dogs tow a sled across Alaska, is now in its eighth year—and we’re sure that part of its longevity can be attributed to the zany substitutions involved (i.e., humans instead of dogs tow shopping carts over the snowy, rough terrain of New York City). Though registration for the event closed January 25, cheering on the teams is just as fun. All contestants (more than 400 competed last year) are required to come up with an original theme (we’ve seen vikings, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, Top Gun, Vegas gamblers), create spectacular costumes, and pimp up a shopping cart—though no motors allowed, that would be cheating. Stay for the after-party, with prizes awarded to the winning teams.
