Instead of the Diary of a Young Girl, playwright Rinne Groff offers a play that might be titled The Memoirs of a Middle-Aged Man. In Compulsion, her ingenious mingling of historical fact and fiction centers on a writer named Sid Silver (based on the real-life figure Meyer Levin). Fixated on Anne Frank’s diary, Silver spends much of his life in the U.S. and Israel struggling to promote the girl’s story and adapt it to the stage—for reasons that may seem less altruistic than they first appear. Mandy Patinkin and Hannah Cabell, as Silver and his wife, reprise their roles from the New Haven debut, and Oskar Eustis again directs this half-invented chronicle. Will it obsess audiences?
