Scarlet Street

Dir. Fritz Lang (1945). Fritz Lang applied his own nightmarish geometry to a story that Jean Renoir had shot, seemingly off-the-cuff, as La Chienne. The Lang version is a lesser movie but the s&m romantic triangle he constructs out of Joan Bennett’s lazy young tart, Dan Duryea’s oily pimp, and Edward G. Robinson’s middle-aged bank teller is unforgettable.
