Voguing meets postmodern dance

In the 1960s, two very distinct styles of dance emerged simultaneously in the city: uptown, the Harlem ballroom scene saw the start of “voguing” (yes, like the Madonna song) and, downtown, the pioneers of postmodern dance were breaking traditions at Judson Church. For his decade-long series Twenty Looks or Paris Is Burning at the Judson Church, choreographer Trajal Harrell has explored the question: What would have happened if dancers of the two styles met? Receiving their world premieres are two new chapters of the series: Medium (M) and Extra Small (XS). Additionally, there will be one performance on Sunday of Small (S), which was selected by Time Out as one of the best dance performances of 2009 and was seen by sold-out crowds at the New Museum last year.
