THE WEDDING PLANNER

Florists, guest lists, DJs—oh my!

For anyone who has experienced the pleasure (and, OK, mostly pain) of planning a wedding, cartoonist Adrian Tomine’s autobiographical Scenes From an Impending Marriagewill surely resonate all too well. There’s Tomine hunched over his invitations, meticulously addressing each one with a calligraphy pen (for three days!). There’s the requisite awkward dance lesson. And, for those who are particular about their taste in music, there’s the awkward conversation with the DJ, who tells the beleaguered couple that they should just get an iPod if they don’t like her song suggestions (such as Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll”). Tonight, Tomine, a contributor to The New Yorker, tells author Leanne Shapton what he learned from the experience.
