Pam Murphy kicks cancer where it hurts

Taking to heart the adage “Laughter is the best medicine,” comedian Pam Murphy has crafted The C Word, a hit solo show about her year-long fight against breast cancer, now having a return engagement at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Murphy takes the audience through her heartbreaking diagnosis, surgery, and treatment up to her rocky first blind date post-mastectomy at which she immediately breaks it down for him: “These are fake. Don’t get too excited. . . . This nipple is made out of that nipple, and this areola is just a tattoo.” And then she recognizes her date’s confusion: “Karen didn’t tell you I had breast cancer? Did she tell you I smoke?”
