Local indie-classical whiz kid Nico Muhly has spent a good portion of the past few years working his magic on other people’s records—see Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest, Björk’s Volta, and Goby Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi, among other examples. This week, the composer premieres a new piece of his own called Tell the Way, which, according to the St. Ann’s Warehouse website, “draws from American folk sources, prayers for the Royal Navy, early colonial diaries, Mandeville, Herodotus, and Marco Polo.” (That’s it?) Ever the collaborator, Muhly solicited help from avant-folkie Sam Amidon and Bryce Dessner of the National, both of whom are slated to appear here alongside the Brooklyn Youth Chorus.
