OUT OF CONTROL

Geoffrey Rush knows crazy

He won a Tony in 2009 for starring as the mentally disturbed ruler in Exit the King. Now Geoffrey Rush stars as another neurotic in The Diary of a Madman, based on one of Nikolai Gogol’s greatest short stories about a civil servant named Poprischin who is slowly being driven insane by the repressive bureaucratic system he slaves under in St. Petersburg. Rush, who originally played the lead in Australian director Neil Armfield’s 1989 production, reprised his role in December at the Belvoir St. Theatre in Sydney to rave reviews and, lucky us, it’s now here at BAM. Armfield, who also directed Exit the King, reunites with Rush to stage the revival. Note that there is no Sunday, February 27, performance because, you know, a very important speech therapist has a special date at the Oscars.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Feb. 11. Continues through March 12, 2011
