It may be illegal to profit from playing poker in New York, but what if a bunch of sweet-faced kids are the ones to benefit from your throwing money to the wind? Tonight, in a seedy backroom in Dumbo (OK, it’s actually a beautiful loft), sign up for Poker With Jokers, a fundraiser for 826NYC, the writing program for children founded by McSweeney’s editor Dave Eggers. In this Texas Hold ’Em tournament, take on actor-comedian Michael Ian Black, This American Life host Ira Glass, the Daily Show’s “resident expert” John Hodgman, and—gulp—poker pro Andy Bloch to win great prizes. If you should go bust in the first hour, you can repurchase your buy-in for $250. After all, you’ll want to stay in the game for the chance to win the grand prize: a $10,000 seat at the World Series of Poker 2011 in Las Vegas.
