The Panic in Needle Park

Dir. Jerry Schatzberg (1971). Fashion photographer Jerry Schatzberg’s dope opera, an American art film that would have found its natural home in a 42nd Street grind house, introduced Al Pacino his film debut as a hustler-junkie-a force of nature. Relative neorealism and an open ending weren’t unusual in 1971, but The Panic in Needle Park is unusually sordid and filled with cherce “Fun City” locations.
