Since making her mark on the scene with Frozen—a knockout play about a child killer, his psychiatrist, and the mother of one of his victims—Bryony Lavery has taken some punches. In the midst of the play's triumph, she was hit with accusations of plagiarism. A lesser woman and writer might have stayed down, but Lavery came back swinging, issuing an apology and going on to write a series of formal and thematically challenging plays, often in the company of stimulating collaborators. The latest, Beautiful Burnout, produced by the National Theatre of Scotland, is no exception. Partnering with Steven Hoggett, who did the extraordinary choreography for Black Watch, she has created a battering, thumping, and striking play about the habitués of a Glasgow boxing gym. Previews begin tonight, opens
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 p.m.; Sundays, 4 p.m. Starts: Feb. 25. Continues through March 27, 2011
