Nassima brings her touch to Andalusian classics
Many centuries after its main period of evolution, Andalusian classical music is being revitalized again by Nassima. The beautiful singer and mandola player is a rarity of the Algerian music form—women have rarely performed it since the formative Al-Andalus period of the ninth through 15th centuries—and her adept vocals also extend to the traditional regional genres of Sufi music from the Maghreb and chaabi (developed in the Casbah of Algiers). Musical preservation is rarely so effortless as when Nassima takes her stage.
