Fall for James Blake

James Blake's speedy rise to mainstream renown has already turned many dubstep purists against this 22-year-old Londoner. But the underground's loss is everyone else's gain: On his just-released self-titled debut, Blake moves beyond clubland utility into a fractured future-soul sphere populated by the likes of Bon Iver, D'Angelo, and the xx, whose own 2009 bow unquestionably paved the way for Blake's breakthrough. Though he made the album by himself on a computer, Blake is on the road with two mates on guitar and keyboard; they're unlikely to turn young James into Dancing Thom, but one never knows. . . .
