As though Auto-Tuned at birth, no singer does more unlikely things with her voice--including chordal emissions, ululations, and circular singing--than this venerable, modernist performer/composer. La Barbara will mark St. Patrick's Day with two James Joyce-inspired works by John Cage, "The Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs" and "Nowth Upon Nacht." She'll also perform Morton Feldman's tiniest composition, "Only," as well as "Gatekeeper" for "amplified voice and sonic atmosphere" from her opera-in-progress inspired by Virginia Woolf and Joseph Cornell.
