Having practiced, practiced, practiced for four decades in the folk collective Fairport Convention, with ex-wife Linda, and on his own, English folk-rocker Richard Thompson is now playing Carnegie Hall. The classical institution's website calls him "one of the greatest guitarists of all time," likely because of how he plays his homeland's traditional melodies alongside blues music in equal measure. But the real reason Thompson is a legend is because of his effortless, confessional songs and the way he innately knows when to dig into a heavy part or to pull back for some lighter reflection: something he shares with Carnegie Hall's best classical performers.
