That Obscure Object of Desire

Dir. Luis Bunuel (1977). Buñuel’s final masterpiece, the story of a teen femme fatal and her middle-aged victim, is blatantly fetishistic (and also a satire of fetishism), an even funnier exercise in frustration than The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and a comic Vertigo perhaps more universal: Its protag is madly in love with something that cannot exist.
