Time Regained

Dir. Raul Ruiz (1999). Raul Ruiz does the impossible in adapting the labyrinthian finale to Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past. A golden reverie on a passing age, namely ours, Time Regained isn’t as provocatively cheap as standard Ruiz but neither has he abandoned his “underdeveloped’’ disrespect for European culture—the movie suggests an irreverently lively, historically specific, colorized version of Last Year at Marienbad.
