Adam Rogers Quartet

The man's a whiz--a guitarist who can wax provocative one moment, genteel the next. Rather than causing schisms, this approach breeds unique flow, turning Rogers's solos into emotional roadmaps. You can hear it on his Monk covers("Let's Cool One" from Sight, say), and it's in the air when he connects with the feisty rhythm section of bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez. His exchanges with pianist and indie rock fiend Aaron Parks should nudge him away from any norm that might crop up.
