SONIC RELIEF

Two benefits for Japan draw marquee names

As relief efforts valiantly march forward in Japan, it’s very heartening to see so many New York musicians step up and offer their aid. This week brings two solid new benefit concerts: On Friday, Abrons Art Center presents the Concert to Benefit Japan Earthquake Relief, an evening split into two blocks, the first featuring Thurston Moore, Matthew Shipp, Masada String Trio, and more; the second includes Norah Jones, Jesse Harris, and more. On Saturday, Japan Society’s Concert for Japan, a marathon 12-hour event of dozens of performances organized by jazz guru John Zorn; notable acts include Philip Glass with Hal Willner, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Lou Reed, and Laurie Anderson with Zorn. Abrons Art Center: 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., 466 Grand Street, 212-598-0400, $35–$50 Japan Society: 11 a.m., 333 East 47th Street, 212-832-1155, $5–$100
Fri., April 8, 11 a.m., 6:30 & 9:30 p.m., 2011
