David Foster Wallace, who was 46 at the time of his death in 2008, has achieved a cultlike following as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. Numerous parties were planned for April 15, the official release of his posthumous novel The Pale King, but were quickly thwarted when it was discovered that Amazon and Barnes & Noble were selling the book online in March. So tonight’s David Foster Wallace Memorial Readathon at Word may not have all the excitement that fans (and this excellent indie bookshop) may have hoped for, but it should still be an engaging evening in which to remember him. Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to e-mail the store (info@wordbrooklyn.com) with a selection from any of his writings you would like read as a tribute.
