Aficionados of both contact sports and fierce women—and that should take in most of us—as well as fans of Drew Barrymore’s film Whip It know that the place to be tonight is Gotham Girls Roller Derby. According to their website, Gotham Girls were formed by “a handful of girls who wanted to skate and hit each other,” but they are also a nonprofit organization and a founding member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. This is a sport that truly taps into New York’s color, with teams like the Queens of Pain, the Bronx Gridlock, and the Wall Street Traitors. It’s also a family-friendly event—really—with no alcohol and all children under five allowed in for free. Extra bonus: A free after-game party at the Rock Shop (249 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn). Meet the skaters, ref, and “jeerleaders” and party until 4 a.m.
Sat., April 16, 8:30 p.m., 2011
