Cartoonist Sally Cruikshank has said it was the Donald Duck comic books she read as a child that subconsciously influenced her to create her own psychedelic world of duck characters in the ’70s, including the beloved Quasi, a groovy duck who dons white gloves, thick, nerdy glasses, and a red cape wherever he goes. Tonight at Just Ducky: The Films of Sally Cruikshank you can see Cruikshank’s most important hand-drawn works from the ’70s and ’80s, including “Quasi at the Quackadero,” which was listed in Jerry Beck’s The 50 Greatest Cartoons and features assistance from her then-boyfriend, underground cartoonist Kim Deitch. “I like to create anthropomorphic universes where anything can talk back to you, where any door can say hello,” she said in a 1980 interview. Immerse yourself in her wacky universe with this program that also includes her videos and other works produced for Sesame Street, as well as an interview with her recorded specifically for this screening.
