Ikiru

Dir. Akira Kurosawa (1952). Kurosawa followed his adaptation of The Idiot with a gloss on Tolstoy’s Death of Ivan Ilych focusing on a Tokyo bureaucrat. It’s a humanist classic that—pace Frank Capra and social realism—is at once too collectivist and too individualist to have been made in either Hollywood or the Soviet Union.
Fridays-Sundays, 11 a.m. Starts: May 6. Continues through May 8, 2011
