TOILET TALK

A controversial Spanish play tests New Yorkers

Apparently, Spanish playwright Íñigo Ramírez de Haro has taken holy orders—orders to offend. Originally titled Me Cago en Dios or I Shit on God, his play has since toned down the nomenclature (it's called We Couldn't Call It What We Wanted to Call It, So We Called It Holy Crap!!), if not the blasphemous content. La MaMa, long a home to provocative foreign artists, will host this scatological tale of a man suffering obstructions in both his spirit and his bowels. Turns out his constipation owes largely to the influence of the Catholic church. At its Madrid premiere, the play inspired more than 3,300 lawsuits and at least one attempt at arson. New Yorkers have a talent for both litigation and vandalism, so let's see if we can't top that!
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2:30 p.m. Starts: April 28. Continues through May 15, 2011
