What do you do when life hands you lemons? You start a literary magazine. A year ago, former editors at LA Weekly, Laurie Ochoa and Joe Donnelly, founded Slake: Los Angeles, a magazine with a mission to keep alive the "endangered art" of deeply reported narrative journalism and polished pieces of fiction and poetry. Donnelly explains that Slake is an "expansive experiment in narrative journalism, storytelling, art, poetry, fiction—kind of all the things that we're supposed to not have time for anymore." Tonight's reading welcomes experimental novelist Mark Z. Danielewski (House of Leaves), Pulitzer Prize–winning restaurant critic (and Ochoa's husband) Jonathan Gold, top surf journalist Jamie Brisick, and Slake's founders Donnelly and Ochoa.
