There is an entire generation of lesbians who know Pam Grier from her role as the zaftig, sexually experimenting jazz singer and sister of Jennifer Beals on The L Word, and another group of Tarantino fans who only discovered her in 1997's Jackie Brown. To them, we say, get thee to a Netflix. Or to the IFC Center tonight for a screening of Coffy, the first of Grier's many starring roles in blaxploitation films of the early '70s—the ones Tarantino paid homage to in Jackie. The 1973 film features early Grier at her most lithe and bad-ass best, as she plays a vigilante nurse out to avenge her sister's drug addiction.
