Cults

NYC film students by day, '60s girl-group imitators by night, Cults are the handiwork of couple Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin. The unexpected success of a few leaked demos made their band Google-able, thanks to a stirring blend of straightforward sunny pop and an eerie evilness underneath (their biggest hit, "Go Outside," begins with a speech from '60s cult leader Jim Jones). Fraught with a Swedish austerity, the childlike quality of Follin's voice adds a demented flavor to a patina of twinkly love songs about obsession and fear. With Guards and Writer.
