JUDY, JUDY, JUDY . . .

Say that a thousand times fast

In 2009, Bea Arthur made postmortem waves when her estate announced a large donation to the Ali Forney Center, the organization providing help and shelter to homeless LGBT youth. AFC is currently developing a transition residence named in her honor. While the Golden Girl is in our eyes the matron saint of young gays everywhere, there’s another Dorothy who has held that position much longer: Judy Garland. Tonight, gay comedy show the Meeting hosts Night of a Thousand Judys, a tribute to the long-departed songstress whose death, for all intents and purposes, kicked off the Stonewall Riots. Cabaret favorites Jackie Hoffman, Cole Escola, Kim Smith, and Lady Rizo, among others, take on the star's tunes. Proceeds from the event benefit the Ali Forney Center, so hopefully the org will one day own a slew of shelters named after the great showgirls of the 20th century. Ethel Merman House, anyone?
