Witchfinder General

Dir. Michael Reeves (1968) Long a cult item—in part because its talented 25-year-old director committed suicide—this horror flick is an extraordinarily bleak story of political evil, set amid England’s 17th century civil war, with Vincent Price as a pious opportunist who discovers Catholic “witches”—and enables their neighbors to put them to death. The movie bears the marks of its period, but its evocation of cynical puritanism and mass deception is frighteningly contemporary.
