Were there any gay sailors on Columbus's expedition to the New World? Ask Michael Bronski, the author of A Queer History of the United States, the first book covering LGBT history in America from 1492. In this all-encompassing tome, Bronski proves that gay history didn't start at Stonewall. He details the laws regarding homosexuality colony by colony, then state by state; moves into the Civil War (and the cross-dressing women soldiers who fought in it); surveys gay life in the 19th century; and culminates with the contemporary battles the gay community has been fighting for the past few decades.
