Dirty Beaches main man Alex Zhang Hungtai effortlessly conjures an old-fashioned world in his atmospheric pop, a simulacrum of '50s pleasantry with beachside lo-fi and murmured vocals. Yet the Taiwanese-born, Montreal-dwelling multi-instrumentalist also courts darker tones--his stellar debut disc Badlandspulled influence from David Lynch films. Cue up "My Girl's a Horse Rider" or "Lord Knows Best" to get inducted into his misty water-colored memories, as brooding as they are lovely. With Lower Dens; presented by the River to River Festival.
Fri., July 1, 7 p.m., 2011
