Day of Wrath

Dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer (1943). Dreyer’s other witch movie is stark and brooding—an elemental tragedy not so far from a James M. Cain triangle, albeit set in a 17th century Danish village that’s a miniature terror state run by church fathers. There are subtexts aplenty but the great thing about Day of Wrath is that its allegory is as free-floating as its moral accountings are ambiguous.
Wednesdays-Fridays, 1:30 p.m. Starts: July 6. Continues through July 8, 2011
