"There is pain in everyone's history," the saxophonist/conceptualist told NPR. But tending to wounds is only one part of her extended genealogical narrative, a poetic soundscape that places Toni Morrison in her sights while blending jazz excursions with dramatic turns based on her family's Southern roots. This particular chapter harks to a relative who taught himself how to read by writing music for voice.
