Notes on An African Orestes

Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini (1970). More than a curiosity but less than a fully realized work, Pasolini’s 16mm sketch for a never-made film, transposing Aeschylus’s myth of the first human tribunal to the Third World, is disarmingly casual but far from unstructured—the essay form suited Pasolini better than his overblown glosses on Chaucer or The Arabian Nights.
