Dir. Martin Scorsese (1986). Scorsese’s sequel to The Hustler is filled with classy moves and virtuoso passages—and Tom Cruise banks off of Paul Newman for one of the best performances of his career. Still, there a hollow echo to the visual clatter and the emphasis on integrity isn’t helped by the movie’s sentimental upbeat ending.
