Unitarian Universalists are starting to call their “religious education” programs—from Sunday School to adult classes—“Lifespan Faith Development”. Makes me wonder about their much-vaunted commitment to reason; I certainly do not want to “develop” irrationality; just the opposite. I wonder if I really belong among the UUs, for all their efforts toward justice?

Sally G 08/31/2011 8:37:00 AM
I did not ask for any such “sacrifice”; I was not even alive, so how could he have done something for me, who did not even exist at that time?
Sorry, not interested.

Jesus is a tawdry gimmick used to control stupid people.
-

Jesus is Bullshit.
Historically, every civilization has had a virgin birth/messiah gimmick that they appropriated for crowd control purposes. It has always amazed me how SERIOUSLY our culture took the whole story so seriously, to the detriment of our peoples, treating the whole fantasy as if it was grounded in reality, not to mention FACTS.

i cannot believe people believe the bible is the word of god just because it says it is. It is full of lies, bad writing, inconsistencies and plagiarism. People believe because they do not want to think. They talk like faith is a strong thing but actually it prevents them from learning.

The "religious" people I know that break the mold you described are not repressed by a religion but rather freed by a direct relationship with God through Jesus as described in the new testament. Refreshing!

Fundamentalists are worse than the Catholic Church. Does anyone today REALLY take Matthew 5:28 literally? That having feelings for the opposite sex, and fantasizing about them, are "damnable offenses"? Oh yes, some people actually DO believe this, but I ask, are they rational? The bible is their crutch; they should try thinking for themselves!

Genius! I'm glad there are people out there with their eyes open too. We passed the Dark Age long time ago but "Higher" interests insists on keeping people dumb and ignorant so they can still believe in the supernatural. Sad, very sad.

The greatest knot upon the liberty of all European people is the praeterpolitical power of the churches to institute monogamy as an ecclesiastic rule of law, thereby enabling them to determine the legitimacy of the succession of the pagan kings, abrogate the natural rights to property and self-defense, as well as power of ecclesiastical censure for divorce.
The government of men's external actions by religion, pretending the change of nature in their consecrations cannot be esteemed a work extraordinary, it is no other than a conjuration or incantation, whereby they would have men to believe an alteration of nature that is contrary to the testimony of sight and of all the rest of the senses...
The idea "thou shalt marry and be given in marriage" is corrupt and degenerate, which is an impossible immortality of a kind (i.e., eternal love), but not of the persons of men.
Ecclesiastics would have men believe they will receive condign punishment for their contumacy of monogamy, as opposed to the freedom of the polygamy found in nature, which is inherently pagan.
The evolution of mammals is entirely heterosexual and you buy the religious meme of monogamy?

amusing michael -- there is irony in your piece as i just met a flaming christian hypocrite with amnesty international who couldn't contend with being in pacifist mode nor in assisting with human rights matters. yet, i've also had to work with flaming faggots who wouldn't know the hole in their head from the hole in the video booths on 14th street as human rights were flushed so they could pay their rent in the new east village that's like greenwich, ct as long as they buy a wrist band for matthew shepard. thus, there are problems with several religions that have been anti-gay....but haven't a lot of gay men become rather docile and silent in the face of plenty they've received while being too silent and rather flaccid. i was often wondering about this silence, but after working on a piece of shit project i came across this quote from wild haired einstein who would have loved the chelsea hotel. "it's not evil who will destroy the world, it will be the people (like keni valenti) who remained silent while seeing what it was doing"

Mr. Musto's article was highly amusing and often hilarious but at the same time a painful reading experience for me. I was a kid who took my early Roman Catholic education very, very seriously which resulted in total disaster. Without going into gritty detail, let me state that I was one of those unfortunate kids who believed all the bullshit that was forced down my throat by the nuns and priests. It profoundly affected my adult life and I'm still reeling from the consequences of growing up with all that Catholic Dogma. I've renounced it but sadly I didn't have the presence of mind in my adolescent and young adult years to fend off the absolute evil that lurked just below the surface of those who represented the all knowing clergy, who I later realized were devils in disguise. I am not a fundamentalist, a born again, I'm an atheist who learned the hard way that to put one's faith in the hands of the Catholic Church is tantamount to being raped both figuratively and literally. My disgust for the Roman Catholic church knows no bounds.

My favorite comment out here is 'Jesus is a cunt" from a guy named Mohammed. The cunts are the people who took the words of some simple men (the other cunt, Mohammed, as well) and used them for their own nefarious means. Love Musto, agree with and love the column, but it is soooo simple-minded. And with all the attacks on every religion, Islam goes unscathed. Why is that, Musto? Afraid the Voice is going to be bombed? Don't worry. People don't even know it exists any more.

The key is for moderates to bind together. The difference between a moderate republican, democrat, atheist, agnostic, buddhist, christian and muslim are far less than extremists of any political, religious or social affiliation.

Movielover 08/03/2011 7:34:00 PM
You're "spot-on!" in most everything you say, though I know you're being jokey. It seems to boil down to "Do you believe in some kind of system of things or is everything random?" Beyond that, the details humans concoct about all this is superstition, prejudice and stultifying fear. The world would really be better off if there was no "religion" at all, and I mean the god clubs everyone is so painfully stupid about.
-
Gcndc 08/03/2011 6:35:00 PM
I agree completely. I was lucky enough that when I was in Catholic school I questioned everything and nothing bout the bible or god or jesus made sense to me. I from the time I was young I realized it was all bullshit.
-
Estelle 08/03/2011 5:54:00 PM
You didn't even mention a relationship with gods or God once. All I read was you (justly might I add) complaining about said religion's followers. To me, that makes your ranting no different than a religious persons argument about an atheist.

Can anyone hate their religious indoctrination any more than a lapsed Catholic? That is the case w/ Michael Musto, and it's certainly the case w/ me.
On the other hand w/o Catholism, what would all the artists and writers have to rail against? Love it or hate it (I do), it seems to be an integral part of the pie.

Some of my favorite 'atheist, agnostic, free-thinking, anti-religion' books: 1.) 'Why I am Not a Christian' by Bertrand Russell, an all-time classic; 2.) 'God and His Demons' by Michael Parenti; 3.) 'Divinity of Doubt' by Vincent Bugliosi. Bugliosi goes off the rails when he questions the science behind evolution but other than that his 'Divinity of Doubt' is a marvelous book from the agnostic perspective.

"But the thing I hate the most is that I happen to have met some religious people who aren't petty or bigoted at all, and that tends to annoyingly get in the way of a lot of my theories". Does that mean you need to keep looking to find what they have found?
The writer seems to based in Christianity and then comparing the tradition of others in a strange mix of theories. This, to me, shows a lack of a true understanding of any and suggests a need to study without the "blinders" of dogma. Let me put it a different way; one must have the freedom of an independent search for truth without the fetters of past learning.
I would suggest to the author toward this study to search for the religion that has the following ideals, for that may be a key in understanding all religions:
The oneness of mankind has to be admitted, an ability to have an independent investigation of truth (as mentioned earlier), the recognition of a common foundation of all religions, the belief that there is harmony of science and religion, the real equality of men and women must be recognized, the understanding there is a need for universal compulsory education, and a recognition of a universal auxiliary language so everyone can communicate to all.
It seems to me that once those ideals are found in a religion there will be no "hell" as implied in the article for the acceptance of these principles in world encompassing - and is that not what should be in a religion? I wonder if such exists, don't you?

That is quite ok! I once had the very same situation happen with my Cafe' Bustelo coffee grounds on my kitchen counter. But after I ran and summonsed all my neighbors. And of a much long and thorough investigation by dear Father Tooly, who was always drunk and very unruly. And the divine Sister Very Too Much from the convent San Tango. Well after 4 or 5 glass of some really good home made Italian wine.Well we came to the undeniable conclusion that the coffee grounds did not bare much resemblance to the Virgin Mary , but more to the resemblance to Mary Martin of Peter Pan. But not to worry. In 1980 in of all places sunny Fort Lauderdale I meet and fell head over heels in love with a beautiful young man named Thomas who fled the priesthood in Rome. Well to make a long story short. After a wonderful year and a half of pure bliss, and a hell of alot of helium in our heels and unbridled passion in our hearts. He had to go back to Canada. But as a gift to me for the wonderful time we shared together he gave me 178 purgatory passes. So as Farther Guido Sarducci says if you have a box full of purgatory passes, Not to worry! Arrivederci!

Mr. M.,
The photo scared me. Unfortunately 55 yrs.ago, those women ( without the guns ) but leather straps look the same. Especially the one on the far left. Clearly, the Mother Superior. Little did I know what was to come: The Christian Brothers of Ireland. Those nuns abuses were a "walk in the park" compared to what was to follow. Sad tale to relate.
Cheers.
