The artistic lineage connecting the White Stripes to North Carolina's probable prince of guitar grime tends to be overstated, largely since the latter also enjoys using the guitar-and-drums duo format for his blues-rock and is signed to the label run by Jack White. But Romweber's music is actually of a decidedly different breed, more indebted to Elvis and rockabilly than anything so overtly alt-rock. When it succeeds, it's not through barely controlled explosions of guitars or vocals but dark lyrics about women and the devil.
