Vicious World

Rufus Wainwright’s rich melodies and saucy delivery have long been inviting to jazzers—Dave Douglas took a shot at “Poses” way back in ’02. Tonight the septet Vicious World jumps in the deep end, dedicating itself to arty spins of the dramatic songwriter’s nuggets. A trombone glides through "Natasha,” a clarinet leads “Peach Trees.” There’s more chamber decorum than there is unfettered swing, but somehow the improv breathes freely and new perspectives are unearthed.
