More About

Who knew back in 2004, when writer Gustavo Arellano wrote his first “¡Ask a Mexican!” column for our sister paper the OC Weekly, that one day it would be transformed into a play? It’s actually no surprise considering that this weekly column, in which readers submit their questions about everything Mexican—including customs, labor issues, and illegal immigration—has garnered thousands of followers nationally, won several awards, and is also a book. Now Arellano, after declining movie and television offers for his writings, is saying yes to theater. Today, Arellano’s play gets a first-ever reading as a part of the Latino Mixfest, an annual showcase of Latino-themed plays from across the country that offers public readings and workshops for aspiring playwrights. Arellano told us that he chose his favorite questions that he has answered over the years, ranging from Dillingham Commission to the Dirty Sanchez, and said we can expect lots of Mexican music and “desmadre.” That’s Spanish for “total chaos.”
